If I Was…

Ever Curious

With the cool wind blowing against my warm cheeks
Each foot stepping in front of the other
Welcoming the silence of my companion
Leather gloves sheltering my hands
The knowledge and contentment
The sense of adventure
The words begin to flow…

If I was a writer, I would write about the time we lay on that compact, concrete road
Looking up at the night sky
I would describe the delight I felt
The sense of joy
I would detail all the intricacies
Of the deep greenness
The flowery blue dresses
The purity of feeling

If I was a singer, I would sing about the deep longing during those lengthy, lockdown days
I would sing about the contrast between isolation and freedom
Entrapment and adventure
I would sing about those deep connections and hour-long calls
Renewing me with a sense of burning fire
Exhiliration and desire
I would sing about having felt accepted
About having finally found my place

If I was a philosopher, I would lecture about the separation of body and mind
Of thought and action
Of feeling and choice
I would lecture about the importance of patience
Sticking with the feeling
As I was forced to do on those long lockdown days
I would lecture about pushing through to the other side
And looking back on a life built on an aspiration
An aspiration to love
To love fully
